To the editors:

The Lesbian and Gay Graduate Collective (LGGC) would like to recognize your excellent coverage of “alternative” issues; issues we wish the mainstream press would deal with more frequently and forthrightly. In particular we would like to commend your efforts at addressing lesbian and gay issues in the Alternative Press.

The cover art on a recent edition of the A.O. sparked controversy in the Lesbian and Gay Graduate Collective. The artwork displayed gay men in ancient Greece alongside of artwork depicting gay men today. On the one hand some members were thrilled to see gay and lesbian art that was selected for the cover; on the other hand some members objected to the art that was selected for the cover. It is not suprising that the predominant images of homosexuality in ancient Greece were images of men, however, we were discouraged to see very few lesbian images in the modern artwork. Another point of discussion was that some members were concerned that gay men and lesbians were portrayed only in a sexual manner, while others thought it was important for heterosexuals to see homosexual art since we’re constantly bombarded with images of heterosexuality.

Thanks for presenting the alternative news. You created controversy in our group which prompted soul-searching discussions by our members.
