Dear Mr. De Lancey:
It has recently been called to my attention that you wrote me a letter which was published in the January 1993 “Alternative Orange.” Had you sent me a copy directly, I would have responded earlier.
You have raised several questions and issues regarding a mailing piece you received which offered a world globe:
1) What is Wayneco Enterprises? It is a company which manufactures quality products designed for alumni groups and professional organizations throughout the country.
2) Solicitation is prohibited during work hours. That is correct. The mailing was sent to home addresses of a portion of the alumni on our system. In order to monitor the types of mailing being sent out, several campus individuals, at their request, have been approved to be included in the “all mail list.” As a Recorder III in the Student Services Office, College of Arts and Sciences, you should not be on this list. I will request that the “all mail list” be reviewed, therefore, to assure that you will not receive any further mailings at your campus address.
3) Does Wayneco make a profit? Yes, of course.
4) Does Syracuse University make a profit from each sale? Yes. The modest income generated is used to support the activities of our student alumni association (SUSAA).
5) Did Syracuse University pay someone to produce a mailing to market Wayneco wares? No. Wayneco assumed the full cost of the mailing at standard bulk rates. They also assumed full cost for the printing of the brochure.
6) Why does the official seal appear on this product? Each year we are given the opportunity too submit for approval the use of the university seal on a quality product which will be offered to the alumni. The world globe was approved. You may be interested in knowing that the use of the seal is being reviewed at present, and there has been some relaxation in the approval of its use, such as on stationary and other university materials.
7) Did the Office of Alumni Relations choose to overlook the possibility of offending some alumni in order to justify a quick profit? No, we did not. While yours is the only complaint that has been received, it is, nonetheless, a valid one. Furthermore, we recognize that it may well be representative of others who have not voiced their concerns. I gather from your letter that your objection is not to the globe itself, but to the fact that it was promoted to commemorate the quincentenary of the voyage of Christopher Columbus. We apologize if we have offended you and others, and will act on your suggestion that we “take some greater measure of care in the future in deciding what goes out” over our name.
In turn, while we respect your right to publicize your views, we would certainly have appreciated receiving a copy of your letter in this office as well.
Sincerely,
Jane M. Lillestol, Ph.D.
Vice President
Office of Alumni Relations
