GAY LESBIAN UNIVERSITY K N O W L E D G E = E M P O W E R M E N T GLU Extension Course News "Creating & Maintaining GLU's" GETTING STARTED What do "they" say? Just do it! Where to begin Starting is the hardest part. Half the process has already started by reading this information about GLU creation and maintenance. Its often been said that the greatest stumbling block to any success is yourself. If we can get out of our own way we can often times just do it. Often times we are our own worst enemies. Making the plunge Take your time and get what necessary support that you may need to carry out the GLU concept. GLU/Seattle and others in the GLU network can of course be considered great support. Local support is of course something that we all desire. This support can come in all sorts of forms. Positive feed back in comments, gestures, advertisers, teachers, students, money etc. In the process of deciding to create a GLU, breaking isolation and allowing those around you to know what you are up to, is a great first step. You will be amazed before we are halfway through. Nothing is forever Things change. If GLU does not work for you in your area, it can always be closed. It can be tested for a period of time. If it proves to be too much of hassle etc then change it or get rid of it. Getting info feedbacks A good place to start is to get questions you might have answered by GLU/Seattle and other GLU people. ASK QUESTIONS, communicate. The asking of questions can short cut a massive amount of dead end work. Questions might cover such topics as: Finding teachers Finding the students Making up catalogs Advertising and a million others. GLU/Seattle has made some great progress yet it has made a number mistakes that you don't have to repeat. Then again mistakes here might actually work for you. We all have different types of skills. By utilizing the skills we already have and acquiring more we can learn to make our efforts pay off. GLU efforts I like to think of GLU more or less as water seeking its own level. Yes much footwork is needed to keep GLU up and running but GLU is not into forcing begging and or twisting of arms. GLU is of the idea that GLU is needed or it will go off to the idea graveyard. GLU can not force people to teach or be students. GLU can not force people to support or advertise in GLU. People will get involved. "They" say it takes time for things to catch on. Somedays I believe GLU will r e a l l y take off then there are those days that I say... Editorial comment #3,000 For me personally doing GLU fits into my lifestyle in a great way. I happen to be a computer addict. I like doing desktop publishing work. GLU is a lot like playing store. Combination "person Friday", computer nerd, secretary, blabber mouth, delivery person, you name it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Hicks tomh@halcyon.com GLU - Gay Lesbian University/Seattle anonymous ftp halcyon.com /pub/GLU POB 20771 Seattle,WA 98102 206-323-7483 F I G H T B A C K W I T H T E C H N O L O G Y ----------------------------------------------------------------
