Pentagon says "no" to permanent Iraq bases

February 6 2008

On February 6, the Pentagon repeated a previous pledge on Iraq:

"The United States will not promise to defend Iraq nor seek permanent bases there under a planned agreement on future relations between the two states, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Wednesday."(1)

The statement represents hope for Iraq's people oppressed by U.$. imperialism. The masses must seek to hold U.$. imperialism to its words. With the cost of the U.$. war in trillions of dollars and thousands of U.$. lives, the Iraqi people have more than rhetorical hopes that what Gates said will come true.
