MIM website traffic returns: explaining 1 to 10 rankings at Alexa

September 21 2008

From March to August, 2008, we totally disappeared after a weak showing since late 2006. When we returned in August, the web traffic company Alexa had us ranked as 7th in the world communist organization category. We have worked our way back to third since then and we expect we will be second behind the so-called Communist Party of China again soon, which is what we were for recent years this century. If we exclude two Marx writings reference sites, MIM will also soon be second among websites in the world calling themselves "Marxist."

We put stock in those 1 to 10 rankings of Alexa, not the page reach or ranking such as "95,003." The one to ten rankings are for categories. So for instance, MIM has a web page that is in the "Black nationalist" category and Alexa compares web traffic for that web page and other Black nationalist pages. That's important, because MIM shares etext.info with other websites, which combined add up to less traffic than MIM's, but somehow Alexa has to distinguish, which it does by categorizing pages.

The page reach and page rank numbers for MIM are not likely accurate for the purposes we want, but the category 1 to 10 rankings do have their own logic. We know their logic to some extent, because they respond to MIM activity. When MIM has a burst of activity, it goes up in the global rankings. The 1 to 10 rankings are NOT the combined reach and page views number ranking, as anyone can figure out by perusing that ranking and comparing what makes up the 1 to 10 rankings. This is true not just of the MIM website but other websites as well.

It is difficult to justify not keeping this website going with the statistics it has. We have many ex-comrades who can fill in elsewhere, but this communist website should keep going.

MIM believes we have influenced other organizations, journalists and even government leaders more than others in the "socialist" category. We have shown that socializing, hand-holding and confrontational in-persyn recruiting are not necessary and may be counterproductive to scientific development. See our recent critique of PLP on how recruiting with old ideas about party-building can backfire.
