THE ESHMS AWARD In 1998, at the biennial conference of ESHMS in Rennes, members of the society will for the second time award the best achievements in the field of medical sociology. As all of you probably know, in 1996 this award has been given to prof. George Brown. The main idea of the award is to highlight and to honor scientific work of the highest quality and to provide an opportunity for wider international recognition of the scientific quality and relevance of European medical sociology in general. By the decision of the General Assembly, the prize is awarded every two years to European social scientist, who has made a substantial and outstanding contribution in the field of medical sociology. The Award consist of ESHMS scroll, and Honorary Membership of ESHMS. It is given during the biennial conference of the ESHMS and the award-winner is invited to deliver a lecture at the plenary session. The lecture will be then published in one of the European leading journals. The Award Committee, responsible for the selection of the winner in 1998, is composed of the following persons: prof. Antonina Ostrowska ( chair), prof. Claudine Herzlich and prof. Johannes Siegrist .. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Criteria for nominees The prime criterion should be outstanding contributions to scientific thought and knowledge in medical sociology through research, writing and/or teaching. In exceptional cases the award could go to someone who is not a medical sociologist, but whose outstanding work in some other field embodies the principles of medical sociology internationally or to a medical sociologist with a respectable scientific record, who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession. However, recognition of faithful service to the ESHMS will be not sufficient. Candidates from other disciplines (e.g. medicine) are eligible but only on the basis of their contribution to medical sociology. Nominees fir the ESHMS Award must be from Europe ( which traditionally includes Israel) but need not be members of ESHMS. Procedure for nomination Nominations must include a written recommendation, with the C.V. of the candidate and a description of his/her most important work. Nominations should be submitted before December 23, 1997 to any of Award Committee member (addresses follow). The decision will be made by 1 May 1966 in order for the winner to prepare a lecture to be presented in Rennes. However, no announcement will be made to ESHMS members, until the Conference. In addition, I remember an earlier similar request that one of our colleagues checked out with the ACS and they said they were not sponsors of these messages and did not solicit donations in this fashion. THERE WAS AN ITEM ABOUT THIS IN THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE GLOBE AND MAIL LAST WEEK. It is hard to believe that people would do such a thing, but this is just a slimy way to get a bunch of email addresses for god only knows what purpose. To add insult to injury, if you read the name of the "little girl" whose wish is supposedly being granted by this chain letter, you will see just how sick the scam artist is. In addition, accepting a chain letter solicitation may be in direct violation of a given university's e-mail policies. It is at mine. Several years ago we were instructed to delete any such message immediately or risk having e-mail privileges revoked. If you have doubts, better to check things out before responding.
