In the two years I've been teaching at Emory this is the first time I'm teaching a class firmly centered on the U.S. The other people who teach it in the dept. use textbooks, which I am trying to avoid. I'm planning to use Domhoff, Hochschild, Rubin, Wilson, & Sidel to illustrate different class positions in our society, and the new Andersen/Collins reader _Race, Class, and Gender_. However, I was wond- ering if any of you had ideas for primary material on notions of class. Like _Communist Manifesto._ Short readings appropriate for intelligent and relatively diligent undergrads in a 200 level class. Thanks for your help. Also, I was wondering if anyone else was going to take part in Paul Allison's _Event History Analysis_ workshop this summer. Thanks, and I hope you all are doing well. I got some great suggesstions. In order to "hook" the students into understanding why stratification is important, I plan to start off by talking about stratification in the educational system. I want to break the students up into small "research" groups, in which they research some aspect of this issue. For example, one group will do research in all of their classes by keeping track of the numbers of times men and women ask questions or make points in discussions (and other pertinent info). I was wondering if any of you have good ideas (either tried or untried) about other types of research the students can do around this issue of education & stratification. The point of this is just to get the students thinking - my colleagues who teach Soc of Ed say that students agree that class/race/gender matter, but they don't matter HERE at THEIR SCHOOL, just in the rest of society. I want to break through and show them it does matter here (as well as everywhere else). You can send suggestions to me (SOCAK663@EMUVM1 - BITNET, SOCAK663@ EMUVM1.CC.EMORY.EDU - INTERNET) or post to the list if you think others would be interested.
